Maybe it’s because of my faulty heart that I loved this talk from Elder Renlund.  I haven’t had a heart transplant, but I’ve had a valve replacement, and I am very aware of the importance of taking care of it.  The heart is vital for our physical welfare.  We cannot survive without it.  Maybe that’s why the Book of Mormon talks so much about the danger of being hard hearted.

Elder Renlund talks about the world seeing a heart transplant as the ultimate operation, but he says that the true ultimate operation is the spiritual change of heart that comes through the atonement of Jesus Christ and the desire to be obedient to the laws and ordinances of the gospel.  But just like a heart transplant recipient must  be diligent in taking the medications necessary to allow the new heart to continue to function well, we need to do the things necessary for our spiritual heart to be healthy and strong.

All of us come to a place in our lives that we enter the waters of baptism, but baptism is just the beginning.  Elder Renlund states; “Just as with heart transplant patients, however, this mighty change of our spiritual hearts is just the beginning.  Repentance, baptism, and confirmation are necessary but not sufficient, indeed, equal, if not greater, care must be taken with a spiritually changed heart than with a physical transplant heart if we are to endure to the end.  Only by doing so can we be held guiltless at the time of judgment.  …We all know of individuals who had this mighty change of heart but subsequently yielded to the natural man.  They became casual in their worship and devotion to God, their hearts became hardened, and they thereby jeopardized their eternal salvation.”

I have always loved the passage of scripture reference by Elder Renlund found in Alma 5:26.  It is a good litmus test of where we are spiritually, and we should ask it of ourselves frequently.

And now behold, I say unto you, my brethren, if ye have experienced a change of heart, and if ye have felt to sing the song of redeeming love, I would ask, can ye feel so now?

To ensure our change of heart remains strong there are things we need to do.  Elder Renlund talks of three; reading our scriptures, saying daily personal prayers, and attending church and partaking of the sacrament.

May we not be casual with this wonderful spiritual gift we have received.  May we nurture and strengthen it that we may “sing the song of redeeming love” all our days on earth.
