Sometimes the greatest thing we can do to get us through tough times is to count the blessings we do have. This basket has many of the things I am most grateful for.

MESSAGE:

I recently listened to two different talks on gratitude.  The first was from Bonnie D. Parkin entitled “Gratitude: A Path to Happiness.”  In it she talks about a family who was going through a tough time.  Their way of handling this time of hardship was to express gratitude for each member of their family and to talk each night of the things they were grateful for.  They called it their “Basket of Blessings.”  Each of us, no matter how difficult our path, has a basket of blessings.

The second talk is from Elder Dieter F. Uchtdorf, “Grateful in Any Circumstances.”  In his talk he says, “Sooner or later, I believe that all of us experience times when the very fabric of our world tears at the seams, leaving us feeling alone, frustrated, and adrift.  It can happen to anyone, no one is immune.  Everyone’s situation is different, and the details of each life are unique.  Nevertheless, I have learned that there is something that would take away the bitterness that may come into our lives.  There is one thing we can do to make life sweeter, more joyful, even glorious.  We can be grateful.  …It might sound contrary to the wisdom of the world to suggest that one who is burdened with sorrow should give thanks to God.  But those who set aside the bottle of bitterness and lift instead the goblet of gratitude can find a purifying drink of healing, peace, and understanding.”  He gives us five areas to focus on.

·      Being Grateful for Things

·      Being Grateful in Our Circumstances

·      Having Gratitude as an Act of Faith

·      Recognizing We are Not Made for Endings

·      Knowing Those Who are Grateful Will be Made Glorious

There is a quote from President Thomas S. Monson that I love and has helped me when things are tough. “Having gratitude in our hearts is to touch heaven.” May we all touch heaven a little more each and every day.
